Galco Leather leather Company and Jim Calams discuss the SLC Memorial Scholarship Foundation
At Gunsite’s 50th anniversary Alumni Shoot, Galco’s Mike Barham spoke with Jim Calams about the Stephanie Lynn Calams Memorial Scholarship Foundation. Jim and his wife established the foundation in memory of their daughter Stephanie, a teacher who passed away in 2012 at age 26. By helping students afford college or technical school, the foundation carries forward her legacy of caring for others.
The foundation’s annual Calams Combat Competition at Gunsite brings together shooting enthusiasts, donors, and supporters to raise scholarship funds. Jim shared that participation grew from 23 competitors in its first year to 155 at the most recent event, and the foundation awarded five scholarships last year. Donations from Galco and other supporters help make the silent auctions possible, turning a day of friendly competition into educational opportunities for students with financial need.
For Jim, Galco’s support also reflects a relationship built over decades of law enforcement experience and use of its holsters. But the heart of the conversation is the students: hearing scholarship recipients describe what the assistance means to them makes the event especially memorable. Through the foundation and its supporters, Stephanie’s legacy continues to help young people pursue their dreams.
